So, okay. I couldn't find the suggestions abot what to buy, so I tried to
remember what I'd been told.
I wound up buying this:

From those among my acquaintances who have acquired the taste for
Scotch, that brand is regarded as good stuff.
It should be noted, however, that Scotch is very definitely an
acquired taste, and on a number of occasions, various people I know
have, on their first exposure to some highly-lauded single malt,
exclaimed "You mean to tell me that people drink this crap for
FUN????!"

It's meant as bait for people whom I know to like Scotch.

Who's going to drink it? Are they familiar with scotch whisky? Single
malts or single grains? Or whisky at all? Or liquor at all?
Would they prefer a burnt taste (highland), a sweet or leathery taste
(speyside), a dry taste (lowland) or a bog/seaweed taste (islay+skye)? Do
they like peat flavour or not? Do they prefer sherry to madeira?
Macallan is liked by many, but it's also standard stock in US liquor stores.
If you're bringing something home, you might want to get something a tad
harder to get?
Don't buy any cask strength liquor, or it might get confiscated, either
because the alcohol content is too high for the state your plane lands in,
or because the ATF laws prohibit labels that advertise "strong", "high
strength" or similar wording. Yes, really. :-)
At the price range you're in (GBP 20-25), you can find many good malts and
blends. Perhaps you should taste a few while in the Kingdom before
deciding? :-)

Then the trick is to get something they /haven't/ tasted but would love to
try.
Hmm, perhaps something like unchillfiltered Te Bheag or Mortlach? I would
have bit.

Try a Bladnoch. It's a local distillery near where I live, and they seem
to go in and out of business on a yearly basis...

Your round first, if I happen to pass by. :-)
And here I thought you were in the Newcastle/Sunderland area, and it turns
out you live in Scotland (presuming that anything ending in -och will be
Scottish). Well, my friends in Southampton might consider the Newcastle
area to be Scotland, or close enough not to make a difference. :-)

Ah, but I am. I live in Scotland, I'm just at uni in Durham. Until the
end of this week, when I bugger off for good, and not a moment too soon.
I'm not, I've found, a student by nature.

Er...but the conference is tomorrow.....
I sense confusion.
I was looking for something to take to a conference in Florida (tomorrow),
where there will be UK-based friends who like Scotch. The particular bottle
I linked to is already in my suitcase. I asked for comments because if I
blundered, I suppose it isn't too late not to take it with me.

Ah, I thought you were looking for advice on what to bring home with you
from the UK. :-)
No, Macallan is usually appreciated by all whisky lovers. It may not be
everybody's favourite, but it's so mellow, so unless you really hate a
slight smoke taste, you can't go wrong.

Take it with you. The Macallan is a pleasant enough whisky, and probably
one of the most universally liked if not that many people's favourite.

Adding just a little water makes most whiskies taste stronger. The trick is
to not add too much.

It's a very good jack-of-all-trades whisky. Not aggressive in any way.

The question is how much of that time was spent in an oak casket. If it was
bottled in 1958, it'd still be a 10 year old whisky. A very old bottle of
10 year old whisky, but still...

Of course, strictly speaking the "older = better" idea doesn't always
apply. It's getting it the *right* age that counts.
Oh, and the casks aren't always oak, of course.
But yeah, you're absolutely right in that a 10-year whisky is still a
10-year whisky after forty years.

As a non-drinker, I've always been amused by the White &
Mackay advert where Phil Kay orders a Whyte & Mackay ... with
cola! An entire pubfull of stolid men in kilts gasps, and the
ground begins to tremble. We then cut to two gravestones,
"Whyte" and "Mackay", rotating at generator-speeds.
We then get the tagline: "Whyte & Mackay double mature. You
don't have to be double mature to drink it", and return to the
pub, where things have calmed down. Then Kay asks for a
straw...

As it stands, though, the plan is to spend a week or two back home in

Not sure what irn-bru is, but I agree, for the most part. Coke is
definitely for inferior whiskey. I have found, much to my chagrin, that
Sierra Mist (sort of a cross between 7-up and Sprite, 1/2 way between the
two) actually makes a very fine mixer for those of us that find straight
whiskey to be a bit much. It adds a bit of carbonation (I know, but I like
